Vera Kobalia has voluntarily resigned from the post of deputy chairman of the National Company Astana EXPO-2017 after working for a little over a month, a Tengrinews correspondent reports citing the company's spokesman Aigul Mukei.
This is not the first major change in the top management of the company in recent days. In fact, the national company has seen a number of high-profile arrests in the past month.
In early June, the former head of the construction department of national company Astana EXPO-2017 Kazhymurat Usenov was arrested. He was suspected of embezzling budget funds in the amount of 214 million tenge via misappropriation. According to investigators, in early 2014, Usenov together with the Executive Director of Southfork LLP and other officials of Astana EXPO-2017 set out to appropriate the funds entrusted to the latter and intended for the preparation of the international exhibition EXPO-2017 in Astana.
Later, on June 11, then head of the national company Talgat Yermegiyaev was dismissed. Akim of Astana Adilbek Dzhaksybekov was appointed to replace him in the position.
Just two days after his removal, Yermegiyaev was arrested. He is accused of embezzlement or misappropriation of another's property on a large scale through abuse of office, committed repeatedly. The court has frozen his assets.
Following this, the managing director of Astana EXPO-2017 Sulambek Barkinkhoev was arrested. He is suspected of conspiring with a group of persons to misappropriate budgetary funds in the amount of 214 million tenge, and cash them out through pseudo enterprises.
During this dramatic reorganization of Astana EXPO-2017 in June, Kobalia assumed the post of deputy chairman of the national company. She led the company's activities in promotion, attraction of international exhibitors and visitors, commercialization and sponsorship, content and post-exhibition usage.
Before that he took up the job in Kazakhstan, Kobalia led social and political work in Georgia, where she served as Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development for two years.
