Diplomatic relations were established on 11 December 1961. In 2010 the trade turnover between the two countries increased up to almost $ 90 mln. Russia exports metal, fertilizer, building materials, machinery and certain types of equipment, and imports tea, coffee, cashew nuts, spices, some rare earth metals.
In Tanzania there are several joint ventures with Russian capital, primarily engaged in exploration and shipping.
