A 'supermoon' lights up skies around the world as the moon's proximity to Earth makes it appear much larger and brighter than usual. The phenomenon, which scientists call a perigee moon, occurs when a full moon coincides with the closest approach the moon makes to Earth. The moon was 353,000 kilometres away at its closest point.
