Woman falls, dies in lift shaft

July 2, at around 22.10, a woman, 24, fell down shaft and died after an unsuccessful attempt to get off an elevator that had stuck between 7th and 8th floors in a high-rise apartment block in the Almagul District, Atyrau. 

Defective lifts are a common problem in Almagul. In August 2012, regional emergency officers had suspended operation of lifts in 9-floor blocks for one month and forced the maintenance contractor to repair them within two weeks.

January 2012, during inspection of city districts, Governor Izmukhambetov had promised a new lot of elevators for Almagul high-rises, which hovewer, have not been installed down to date.
