Malta court turns down request to order action against Rakhat Aliyev

The Magistrates' Court this morning rejected a call to order police action against  Kazakh multi-millionaire Rakhat Aliyev after finding that allegations made by his former bodyguards had not been supported to the minimum level required by the court.

The bodyguards had alleged human rights violations and torture by the former diplomat.

Magistrate Antonio Mizzi said the allegations had not even been confirmed on oath. Those making the allegations had not given evidence, not had they requested others to give evidence.

The court also observed that Aliyev allegedly committed his alleged crimes against humanity between 1997 and 1999. Those acts did not fall within the Maltese criminal code at the time.
