New York, January 28, 2025 – The highlights of the Fifth World Nomad Games have been circulated by UN Headquarters as an official document of the UN General Assembly: https://docs.un.org/en/A/79/668.

The document, submitted to the UN Secretary-General as a Joint Letter from the Permanent Representatives of Azerbaijan, Belarus, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Russia, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, was published in all six UN languages as an official document of the 79th session of the General Assembly under agenda item 12, titled “Sport for Development and Peace”.

The Fifth World Nomad Games, held in the capital of Kazakhstan on September 8-13, 2024, under the patronage of UNESCO, became the largest international competition in traditional sports. As the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stated: “The Olympics of Nomads promote nomadic civilization at the global level.”

Attracting over 2,500 athletes from 89 nations across all regions of the world, the Games united participants and spectators alike in a spirit of friendship and respect. They unequivocally demonstrated the strength of global cooperation in addressing issues affecting communities globally.

The Games showcase 21 highly skilled sports, celebrating the rich and enduring heritage of nomadic cultures of Central Asia and beyond. The Games also play a crucial role in promoting the values of peace, resilience and cooperation across diverse ethnic and cultural landscapes, representing a common humanity with a shared destiny.

Furthermore, the Games hold profound importance for indigenous peoples worldwide, offering a platform to celebrate, preserve and share their ancestral traditions and identities. By doing so, they promote the cultural resilience of Indigenous communities while raising awareness about the challenges that they face, such as the preservation of language and culture. This inclusivity reaffirms the Games as a space where indigenous voices contribute to the shared cultural heritage of humanity.

This is precisely the focus of the UN document, which emphasizes the significance of the World Nomad Games as a key instrument for advancing international cooperation, cultural diversity, and sustainable development. Recognizing their contribution to enhancing intercultural dialogue and safeguarding intangible heritage, the UN highlights their role in achieving the Organization’s goals.

Thus, the Games serve as a prime example of how sport and culture can act as a unifying force for all of humanity, reflecting the UN’s commitment to building an inclusive and harmonious world.

As part of its ongoing initiative, the Permanent Mission of Kazakhstan to the UN has circulated the document among the diplomatic missions of foreign countries and will continue promoting it on the UN platform.
