Nazarbayev summons meeting of Kazakhstan's Security Council

Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev has summoned a meeting of Kazakhstan’s Security Council in Akorda, the presidential residence in Astana, tengrinews reports citing the official website of the Kazakh President.

The Security Council is a consultative deliberative body, which is formed and chaired by Kazakhstan's President. The scope of its duties include developing decisions and strategies in national security as well as protecting the national sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Kazakhstan, maintaining the socio-political stability within the country, and ensuring the constitutional rights and freedoms of Kazakhstan's citizens.

Chairman of the Senate, the upper house of Kazakhstan's Parliament, Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev, Chairman of Majilis, the lower house of the Parliament, Kabibulla Dzhakupov, Kazakhstan's Prime Minister Karim Massimov, Head of the Presidential Administration Nurlan Nigmatulin, Secretary of the Security Council Nurlan Yermekbayev, Chairman of the National Security Committee Nurtai Abykayev, Minister of Foreign Affairs Yerlan Idrissov, and Minister of Defense Imangali Tasmagambetov are the current members of the Security Council. 

During the meeting, Nazarbayev and the Council's members discussed the progress of the National Security Strategy for 2012-2016 and plans to enhance Kazakhstan’s Armed Forces. They also identified the main tasks for the current year.

Presidential Aid and Secretary of the Security Council Nurlan Yermekbayev reported on the current state of the national security in Kazakhstan and the activities of the relevant state bodies.

Nazarbayev emphasized the importance of the measures taken by the country to ensure protection of its national interests at the proper levels, but reminded that extremist, terrorist and economic risks intricate into the global and regional processes remained on the agenda.

To address them Kazakhstan needs to improve its anti-terror infrastructure, the Kazakh President said. In particular, to continue developing the legal and institutional mechanisms for countering terrorism and extremism, take measures to improve the Special Forces’ equipment and their readiness to take part in anti-terror operations.

In addition, awareness-raising activities will be focused on developing resistance of Kazakhstan’s citizens to extremist ideology. These legal and preventive measures are expected to reduce the number of adherents of radical ideas.

Nursultan Nazarbayev also pointed out that Kazakhstan’s government and local executive bodies had to constantly analyze the economic situation of Kazakhstan itself and its main trade partners and if necessary, take relevant measures.

In the emerging conditions, it is of utmost importance to pay special attention to maintaining political stability within the country and work towards eliminating the causes of social and labor conflicts as well as to ensure the rule of law on the part of all participants of labor and economic disputes.

The President of Kazakhstan highlighted that the country would continue making every effort to help resolve the crisis in Ukraine and would use all the available diplomatic resources to achieve that goal.

Besides, the meeting covered the issues related to the military, social, environmental and information security of Kazakhstan.

Following the meeting, the President gave a number of specific instructions to the government. The Secretariat of the Security Council will be responsible for monitoring their implementation.
